Move over Brangelina. BobCat’s in town!

2 Dec

December 1, 2010

It’s December 1 and we just received an early Christmas present. The most incredible Christmas present ever. Bob, Bobby, and I are flying out to the Sundance Film Festival in January for the premiere of the movie “Life in A Day.” We just got the word that we were “formally invited.”

We’re invited. Formally.

What is “Life in a Day” you ask? Well, this is how it all began…

July 6, 2010

Every day, 6.7 billion people view the world through their own unique lens. Imagine if there was a way to collect all of these perspectives, to aggregate and mold them into the cohesive story of a single day on earth.

Today, we’re excited to announce the launch of “Life in a Day,” a historic cinematic experiment that will attempt to do just that: document one day, as seen through the eyes of people around the world. On July 24, you have 24 hours to capture a snapshot of your life on camera. You can film the ordinary — a sunrise, the commute to work, a neighborhood soccer match, or the extraordinary — a baby’s first steps, your reaction to the passing of a loved one, or even a marriage.

Kevin Macdonald, the Oscar-winning director of films such as The Last King of Scotland, Touching the Void and One Day in September, will then edit the most compelling footage into a feature documentary film, to be executive-produced by Ridley Scott, the director behind films like Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, Thelma & Louise, Blade Runner and Robin Hood. LG Electronics is supporting “Life in a Day” as a key part of its long-standing “Life’s Good” campaign and to support the creation of quality online content that can be shared and enjoyed by all.

The film will premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and if your footage makes it into the final cut, you’ll be credited as a co-director and may be one of 20 contributors selected to attend the premiere.

As a film major and video producer/editor, Bob was intrigued with this project and wanted to give it a shot. July 24 just happened to be my first day home from the hospital after my mastectomy. With my blessing, he started filming on that Saturday morning, capturing our first day home together.

On September 15 he received this note:

Hello! Thanks for sending us your video for Life in a Day. We are delighted to tell you that your video has made it into the top 100 hours of footage that we are now considering for the movie. We can’t guarantee that your video will make it into the final cut of the movie, but initially we like what we see!

Followed by this incredible note on October 14:

Hi Bob, Is it possible for you to upload any additional rushes you may have taken from that day? The director has taken a particular interest in your clips and extra rushes could come in useful during the editing process. Please let us know. Many thanks.

Did we read this correctly? The director has taken a particular interest in Bob’s clips? The Oscar-winning Kevin Macdonald has taken a particular interest in Bob’s clips? Oh. My. Gosh.

Bob wrote back explaining that he had sent everything he had except for a clip of my mastectomy but he didn’t think it would be appropriate for the film.

Later that day, Bob received this response from KEVIN MACDONALD HIMSELF!

Hi Bob, I just wanted to tell you personally how much we have appreciated your footage here. You and your wife showed extraordinary bravery and generosity filming and sharing your life on such a sensitive day. I am really grateful for that. And it is so well shot!

We are planning to use your footage in a couple of different spots in the film and I think it is one of the best and most moving things in it.

I totally understand why you have reservations about sending us the material showing your wife’s mastectomy, and I agree that it would not be appropriate for us to show it.  The material we have from you is so powerful and honest anyway.

I look forward to showing you the finished film!

Best wishes and many thanks

Kevin Macdonald

And today Bob received the official letter. The letter we were hoping for:

Dear Bob Liginski, Jr,

On behalf of Kevin Macdonald, Ridley Scott, and the entire Life in a Day team, we are pleased to inform you of your selection as one of the top contributors to Life in a Day, and would like to formally invite you, your wife, and son to attend the film’s world premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, USA in January.

Kevin and his team reviewed over 80,000 submissions, and found your footage to be some of the most compelling and brilliant. Some amazing videos were submitted, so you should certainly be proud.

Someone from the YouTube Life in a Day team will be in touch shortly with detailed information about travel dates, preparations and accommodations. In the meantime, congratulations and thanks so much for your participation.

We’re looking forward to seeing you in Park City!

So there it is. In the midst of probably the most stressful, difficult, and downright lousy six months of our lives, we received the news of a lifetime. A dream come true for Bob. I couldn’t be happier for him. I couldn’t feel prouder. Congratulations Bob. You deserve this so very much!

So, Bobby will take his very first plane ride, and we’ll all have the experience of a lifetime! Not a bad way to put 2010 behind us and to ring in 2011.

It’s going to be a beautiful new year!
